Project Interpretation

The zigzag edges created through simple continuous V-cuts can significantly alter the perception of an object. I delved into the blurring and moiré effects caused by these zigzag edges and crafted a tape capable of producing fascinating effects. By overlapping or three-dimensionally arranging these tapes, intriguing objects can be swiftly created. The zigzag tape, cut from colored paper after bonding, exhibits various changes due to the differing adjacent colors. People can simultaneously perceive phenomena such as halos and gradients, bringing about a remarkable material texture and sense of depth. The dense zigzag edges blur the contours between the tape and space, giving the space a unique feeling. As the viewer moves, the effects produced by these zigzag edges constantly change, drawing people’s attention.

Professor’s Comments

Natsuki Uenagi’s “Zigzag Research” originally began with a study of a rope. In exploring the uses of rope winding and binding, she delved deeply into the phenomena she discovered. Therefore, she paid attention not only to the unfolding on a flat surface but also, particularly, to the visual effects during overlapping, winding, and binding. This work cleverly utilizes the characteristics and thinness of paper by bonding two sheets and processing them into a zigzag shape, without making the thickness noticeable, thereby bringing a unique visual and spatial experience. Additionally, by changing the color on the back, it produces color mixing and contrast effects, giving the work a more complex and unique impression.
